Kailua

Introduction

When it comes to one of the most sought-after beach towns on O'ahu, the neighborhood of Kailua is the one that shines. Located on the East side of O'ahu along a beautiful sandy coastline, Kailua is roughly 13 miles away from downtown Honolulu with as quick as a 25-minute commute depending on traffic.

The epic sunrises, warm weather, world-renowned beaches, and island feel make Kailua one of the most appealing places to live in Hawai'i, especially to those moving from another state or country. Kailua spans just over 10 square miles and is just shy of 40,000 residents calling this unique community their own.

The Neighborhood

With a mixture of single-family homes, condos, and townhomes built as early as the 1930s, there is something for everyone. However, pricing has a pretty large range with single-family homes well into the multi-millions. The median listing home price has made a steady increase just in the last few years from $1.1 million to $1.4 million, showcasing the demand for this popular beach town.

Until the recent tightening of restrictions on short-term vacation rentals, Kailua used to be a hotspot for vacation homeowners. It's a different story today, so be sure to have a good discussion about that if you are looking for that type of rental property.

Kailua offers an abundance of outdoor lifestyle opportunities, such as Lanikai Beach, which ranks among the top beaches in the U.S. with piercing blue waters and silky white sand. The Mokulua Twin Islands offshore are iconic and visible from the beach, and people can also take a quick hike up to the Lanikai Pillbox and catch a breathtaking sunrise over the islands. Surfing, paddleboarding, snorkeling, and kayaking are all popular watersports here as well. Eat your way through town at a variety of restaurants and eateries after window shopping at local farmer's markets and boutique stores. There are also a couple of big box stores like Whole Foods and Target to cater to what you may be used to.

Your healthcare needs are fully covered by Kaiser Permanente, Castle Medical Center, and a slew of urgent care facilities. There are likewise a variety of public schools to choose from, but if you prefer a private school, Les Jardin Academy is just on the edge of town.
